Organized and led by the indefatigable Nora Paffrath and her husband Larry, over 200 volunteers gave up a Saturday morning and followed Jesus’s command to “Feed the Hungry” on October 2 at St. Therese.
We packed almost 35,000 meals in about an hour and a half! Rise Against Hunger sends food to hungry people all over the US and to 70 countries. Our meals were sent to Ethiopian schoolchildren whose desperately poor parents let them go to school because they would be fed there. By getting an education, these children will be able to break the cycle of poverty and be able one day to feed themselves and their children.
It was a heartwarming, exhilarating and rewarding experience and we’re looking for someone to lead this project so we can do it again next year. Nora and Larry and the members of the Peace & Justice Ministry will be there to guide and assist you. Think about it, pray on it and let us know if you’ll be the one to lead this project next year. God bless you and all the people who participated!

Rise Against Hunger supports 274 preschools and early childhood development centers where children spend the day while their parents work. The centers promote education, encourage school attendance, and improve the health and nutrition of the children. Healthy meals and other school supplies relieve the centers’ budget dollars, allowing allocation of resources toward government registration and ultimately long-term, sustainable funding. During six months in 2016, more than 12,320 children were provided 663,404 meals. Since program inception, 15 centers have achieved registration and are eligible for support from the Department of Social Development. The exit of these centers from the program makes room for new preschools to participate, reaching even more community children.
