Altar Servers at St. Therese are one of our premium youth ministries. Young men and women from 3rd grade through 12th grade participate in this ministry.
This ministry is ancient in the church and is derived from the Acolyte sub order of the late first millennium. Basically, there were not enough acolytes to go around so the church instituted Altar Servers.
Altar Servers minister to either the Priest or Deacon during our Liturgies (Mass, Confirmation, etc.) or devotional worship services (Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Stations, etc.)
When a deacon is not present at the above, the server is the first minister of the altar. The server is responsible to assist and help the priest in performing his duties.
At St. Therese servers are required to participate in several hours of training. We have three levels of Altar Servers and training is required at each level.
Our regular servers are gold cinctured. They assist at Mass in all positions, Acolyte, Master of Ceremonies, Book Bearer. They also are trained in solemn services.
Our advanced servers are red cinctured. They are trained and serve at special services such as funerals, stations of the cross, Holy Thursday, Easter Vigil, Confirmation, etc.
We normally have at least two recognition events throughout the year. One is always a Community Pancake Breakfast near Pentecost Sunday. Look for more information about this year's events in the bulletin.
Young members of St. Therese who are interested in this ministry should contact the coordinator at the email address below.
The Altar Server Ministry for St. Therese allows you to give a wonderful service to your parish.
On August 12, 2001, Pope John Paul II spoke to more than two thousand young men and women altar servers gathered in Rome. He believed as an Altar Server, you will be more than helpers ..."you are servers of Jesus Christ...you, altar servers, are called in particular to be young friends of Jesus..."
God does not call strangers. He calls friends. If he is calling you to serve, please answer by contacting the coordinator!
